Child care fees in Toronto are higher than anywhere else in Canada.
Parents have been left waiting for available spaces and women, in particular, have been forced out of the workforce.
This affordability crisis is taking its toll on young families, but instead of taking action, Justin Trudeau and Toronto’s Liberal MPs wasted 6 years making excuses while fees kept climbing. And when it finally looked like a plan was on the way - Trudeau called an election before a deal with Ontario could be reached.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
- New Democrats will work with other levels of government, Indigenous communities, families and child care workers to ensure that care is inclusive and responsive to the needs of all Canadian children.
- We’ll immediately work with the provinces to build a universal, $10 a day childcare system that’s there for all parents, no matter where you live.
- And we’ll introduce legislation that enshrines Canada’s commitment to high-quality, public child care in law.
- We will take immediate action to save not-for-profit child care centres that are at risk of closure with relief funding to re-open spaces that were lost during COVID-19.
New Democrats will create more child care spaces so families don’t spend months on wait lists, and ensure that child care workers are paid a fair, living wage. Families in Davenport and across Canada deserve no less.
