Private profit has no place in the care of our loved ones.
The pandemic has shown Canadians the cost of government inaction and neglect in our health care system. Families have lost their loved ones in long-term care centres across the country.
A recent report found that Ontario's for-profit nursing homes have 78% more COVID-19 deaths than for-profit homes and showed that chain private ownership is one of the main risk factors for serious outbreaks.
And yet, Davenport's Liberal MP voted against a plan to fix Canada's broken long-term care system and implement a Care Guarantee.
Alejandra Bravo and Jagmeet Singh's NDP have a plan to ensure every Canadian, regardless of age, lives in dignity and is treated with respect by their government and the health care system. Our plan would fully remove private profit from the sector by transitioning all for-profit care to not-for-profit by 2030 and investing an additional $5 billion over the next four years in long-term care to boost the number of not-for-profit care homes.
